Fifteen letters survive from David to his aunt Rachel Dunbar and her family. Captured at the Battle of the Wilderness, he died at Andersonville on October 14, 1864. A family note remembers him carving tiny baskets from peach pits in prison.
In November 1863, diphtheria took three of Margaret’s children in one week. In an account the family dates to 1864, she remembers six-year-old Willie dividing a piece of candy and putting both halves in his pockets. He wanted to take one to his sister Prudie when he saw her again.
Jay rode Dandy to Malvern High for four years. On his fourteenth birthday he got to drive the family Model T to take his mother to the doctor. His recollections also name the mare who answered to voice commands and the uncle who needed twenty minutes to get steam up in his car.
